Steve_ Palmgren-webAUSTIN, TX – April 21, 2014Patti Engineering, Inc., a leader in control systems integration, today announced its participation in the 2015 Siemens Oil & Gas Conference taking place at Minute Maid Park in Houston, TX, April 22-23rd, 2015. Patti Engineering Vice President of Texas Operations, Steve Palmgren, will present a session entitled, “Aren’t PLCs just for BITS? Using a Siemens PLC for rapid development of data rich drilling applications.” The conference, hosted by Siemens, will bring together executives, technology leaders, and industry experts for a comprehensive look at how new innovative automation, controls and drive technologies are solving key production challenges facing the Oil and Gas Industry.

Patti Engineering has worked with global oil drilling and production equipment manufacturers; supporting the design and implementation of complex automated drilling technology projects. On Wednesday, April 22, at 3:30 p.m. CST, Palmgren will present a technical seminar on how technological advances in Siemens Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) go beyond the traditional use of the PLC for basic control of bits (discrete I/O). The time required to develop a data rich application is becoming less and less making the PLC a much better tool overall, reducing time for application development, implementation and diagnostics. Palmgren will discuss how to use the following in Step7 or TIA Portal:

  • PID loop functions
  • PID tools for tuning and fine tuning
  • Serial data interfacing to old equipment
  • Open TCP
  • Remote diagnostics
  • Applying your own advanced functions in a PLC

“Horizontal/directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing, or ‘fracking,’ are the technologies that both make shale drilling possible and controversial. With the tremendous growth in directional drilling due to the developments in fracking; control of the drilling process to maximize safety and efficiency is even more important,” commented Palmgren. “We are excited to share our experience, benefits gained, and lessons learned in utilizing Siemens PLC technology to help anyone quickly develop drilling related applications and solutions. “
