Auburn Hills-based Patti Engineering, Inc. recently installed its new Ice.it infrared sensor system above the NHL-regulation rink at world-reknown Orchard Lake’s St. Mary’s Preparatory.
The Ice.it sensor is able to control the ice surface temperature by measuring the actual temperature using an infrared sensor mounted high above in the ceiling. Previously, temperature control sensors were buried beneath the ice and registering an inaccurate temperature for rink managers. A key component of rink managers’ jobs is to obtain that perfect temperature based on the type of skater utilizing his/her rink. The Ice.it product also is web-based so rink managers can manipulate scheduled surface temperature in-house at their desk or remotely optimizing the system for the type of skater scheduled for the ice.

Patti’s initial Ice.it customers are seeing up to a 25 percent energy cost savings with a return on investment within 12 months of installing the system. “This is a fantastic product, “says Brian Klanow, St. Mary’s Athletic Complex Director and Varsity Ice Hockey Coach. “I’m saving on my electric bill, minimizing wear and tear and reducing maintenance on my compressors plus there is a security component because I know when the ice has been used without authorization.”
